The (N)SHÖU O-J is a 0.6/1kV flexible rubber-sheathed cable from TEBAOFLEX CABLE, built for energy supply to mobile equipment, conveyor systems, industrial apparatus, and submersible pumps in mining and heavy industrial settings. It handles both indoor and outdoor installations with minimal trouble.

This is a low-voltage cable that sits alongside TEBAOFLEX CABLE‘s medium-voltage trailing and submersible ranges, covering applications where 1kV is sufficient and flexibility matters more than heavy armour. Think conveyor belts that need to keep running, underground pumps that can’t afford downtime, and mobile equipment that moves constantly throughout a shift.

Construction and Materials

The conductors are electrolytic plain copper wire, stranded to Class 5 per DIN VDE 0295 — flexible enough for reeling and trailing without work-hardening and breaking over time. All cores are insulated with 3Gl3 compound, a rubber formulation that holds up well in hot, dirty, and damp conditions.

The cores are laid up with interstitial ground cores in contact with each other, then wrapped in a special extruded elastomeric inner sheath. The outer sheath is heavy-duty 5GM5 elastomer compound, available in yellow or black. Yellow is the usual choice for underground mining where visibility matters — easier to spot damage, easier to avoid running over it with heavy equipment.

The cable is flame retardant to IEC/EN 60332-1-2 and oil resistant to DIN VDE 0473-811-404 / EN 60811-404. It also resists ozone, solvents, petrol, acids, chemicals, and greases — basically the usual list of things found on a mine site.

Key Technical Parameters

The cable operates from -40°C to +80°C in fixed installations and -25°C to +80°C when flexed. Short circuit temperature goes up to +250°C. Minimum bending radius is 4× overall diameter when fixed and 5× when flexed — tighter than most medium-voltage cables, which makes routing through tight spaces easier.

Maximum tensile load is 15 N/mm² on the conductor. For reeling applications, the cable handles up to 120 m/min with acceleration up to 0.4 m/s². During installation and operation, tensile stress on the conductor should not exceed 15 N/mm². If your application involves high dynamic tensile stress from rapid acceleration, the permissible stress needs to be assessed case by case — TEBAOFLEX CABLE can advise on that.

Test voltage is 3kV. Voltage rating is 0.6/1kV AC, with maximum permissible operating voltage of 0.7/1.2kV AC and 0.9/1.8kV DC.

The cable is available in a wide range of conductor configurations — 3-core, 4-core, 5-core, 7-core, 12-core, 18-core, 24-core, and 3+3 configurations with various earth conductor sizes. Conductor sizes range from 1.5mm² up to 240mm². AWG sizes listed in the datasheet are approximate equivalents — the actual cross-section is in mm².

Q1: What‘s the difference between the (N)SHÖU O-J and the NTSCGEWÖU series?

The NTSCGEWÖU series is a medium-voltage cable (from 3.6/6kV up to 20/35kV) designed for heavy trailing and reeling applications on large equipment like excavators and TBMs. The (N)SHÖU O-J is a 0.6/1kV low-voltage cable, used for smaller equipment, conveyor belts, pumps, and control applications. If you’re powering a 10-tonne pump or a conveyor drive, the (N)SHÖU O-J is the right choice. If you‘re feeding power to a 200-tonne excavator, you’ll want the NTSCGEWÖU.

Q2: Why offer both yellow and black sheath colours? Does it matter which one I choose?

Yellow is the standard colour for underground mining cables in many regions — it‘s easier to spot damage, easier for operators to avoid driving over, and stands out against dark rock. Black is fine for above-ground or industrial installations where visibility isn’t a concern. Both sheaths are 5GM5 elastomer with the same mechanical and chemical resistance properties. Q3: Can this cable be used for permanent underwater submersion?

The datasheet lists submersible pumps as a suitable application, but “submersible” here means pump power supply in wet conditions — not permanent immersion like the (N)TSCGEWOU submersible series. The (N)SHÖU O-J is not waterproofed for continuous submersion at depth. For permanent underwater installations in salty or brackish water, TEBAOFLEX CABLE offers dedicated submersible cables rated to 300 metres.
