Application & Operating Conditions
AS/NZS 2802 Type 412 (Type 412.1) is a 1.1/1.1 kV pliable galvanised steel wire armoured mining power supply cable (35–300 mm²) designed for general mining installations where high mechanical crush protection, tensile strength, and relocatable flexibility are required — across open-cut pits, quarries, and underground metalliferous/hard-rock mines (excluding underground coal mines).
Hard-Rock Declines & Stope Sub-Feeders
Pliable 7-wire stranded galvanised steel armour (AS/NZS 3863) shields 1.1 kV jumbo drill distribution boards, ventilation fans, and stope dewatering pumps from blast flyrock and rib fall.
Open-Cut Pit & Crusher Skids
Unlike rigid PVC/XLPE SWA cables, rope-lay tinned copper conductors (AS/NZS 1125-2.10) and pliable wire armour allow Type 412 feeders to be coiled, towed, and re-hung as pit benches advance.
Three Dedicated Interstitial Earths
Three symmetrical tinned copper earth cores (totaling 15.9 mm² on 35 mm² up to 152.4 mm² on 300 mm²) ensure balanced low-impedance fault return independent of the steel armour.
Underground Coal Mine or Medium-Voltage (3.3–11 kV) Armoured Requirement? Type 412 does not incorporate individual phase screens or a pilot core and is excluded from underground coal mines. For underground coal or 3.3–11 kV screened armoured service, specify AS/NZS 1802 Type 260.
Cable Construction (AS/NZS 2802 Type 412)
Built to AS/NZS 2802, AS/NZS 1125-2.10, AS/NZS 3808, and AS/NZS 3863, Type 412 combines Class 2 EPR core insulation, three interstitial earth cores, elastomeric inner bedding, and pliable galvanised steel armour.

Selection: Type 412 (AS/NZS 2802) vs. Type 260 (AS/NZS 1802) vs. Type 441.1
Selecting the right 1.1 kV mining feeder depends on whether individual core screening, earth-continuity pilot monitoring, or steel wire armour is mandated by site regulations.
| Cable Model | Armour, Screening & Mine Regulatory Fit |
|---|---|
| Type 412 (This Product) | Pliable steel wire armoured, unscreened 1.1 kV (3 phases + 3 earths, no pilot). Cost-effective high-strength 1.1 kV feeder for hard-rock / metalliferous underground mines and open-cut pits. |
| Type 260 (AS/NZS 1802) | Type 260 adds individual composite copper phase screens + an interstitial pilot and extends from 1.1 kV to 11 kV — mandatory for underground coal mines and pilot-monitored MV feeders. |
| Type 441.1 Class 2 | Where unarmoured flexibility with semiconductive core screening and a central pilot is needed at 1.1 kV, specify AS/NZS 2802 Type 441.1 (Class 2). |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Technical answers regarding Type 412 pliable steel wire armour, earth core sizing, and mine compliance.
Why is Type 412 preferred over standard XLPE/SWA/PVC cables in metalliferous declines?
Fixed-installation XLPE/SWA/PVC cables use stiff Class 2 copper conductors and single-wire steel armour that kink when re-strung along advancing declines. Type 412 combines rope-lay flexible tinned copper conductors, thermosetting EPR insulation, and 7-wire pliable galvanised steel armour so sub-feeders can be repeatedly coiled, relocated, and terminated in heavy-duty mining glands.
Why is Type 412 excluded from underground coal mines?
Underground gassy coal mines governed by AS/NZS 1802 require individually earth-screened phase cores and a pilot conductor for continuous earth-continuity tripping (such as Type 260). Type 412 is an unscreened 3-phase + 3-earth armoured feeder tailored specifically to hard-rock metalliferous mines and surface pits under AS/NZS 2802.
Does the datasheet list copper mass alongside total cable mass for freight & copper-escalation pricing?
Yes. Both nominal copper mass (1,161 kg/km on 35 mm² up to 10,104 kg/km on 300 mm²) and total armoured cable mass (4,150 kg/km to 22,000 kg/km) are published in the specification table above for transparent LME copper indexing and mine shaft/decline hanger load calculations.
