Application & Operating Conditions
AS/NZS 1972 Mine Feeder Type 1 is a 1.1/1.1 kV PVC-insulated and PVC-covered screened machine cable (1.5–16 mm², 2 to 30 cores) purpose-built for internal chassis and duct wiring on underground mobile mining equipment including continuous miners, shuttle cars, roadheaders, and personnel transport vehicles.
On-Machine Motor & Control Interconnect
Connects explosion-protected (Ex d) flameproof switchgear enclosures, traction/cutter motors, hydraulic pump starters, and operator control stations inside protected machine cable ducts.
Compact High-Density Routing
Thin-wall heat-resistant V-90 PVC insulation and 5V-90 PVC outer covering achieve minimal outside diameters (9.38–24.7 mm) for tight flameproof gland entries and crowded chassis raceways.
Individual or Collective Earth Screening
Available with individual core screens for 1.5–16 mm² auxiliary motor/power circuits or collective overall braid screening across 2 to 30 control cores (1.5 mm²).
Mandatory Mechanical Protection Notice (AS/NZS 1972): Mine Feeder Type 1 is a PVC-covered cable designed for protected machine ducts. External non-protected installations require supplemental mechanical hose/conduit protection — or select heavy-duty elastomer-sheathed AS/NZS 1972 Type 2S / Type 2S.3 for unarmoured free-air equipment interconnection.
Cable Construction (AS/NZS 1972 Type 1)
Engineered to AS/NZS 1972, Type 1 pairs corrosion-resistant tinned copper conductors with +90 °C rated V-90/5V-90 PVC compounds and high-coverage tinned-copper/polyester composite braid screens.

Selection: Mine Feeder Type 1 vs. Type 2S / 2S.3 vs. Type 209
Selecting the correct Australian underground coal cable depends on whether the cable is enclosed inside machine ductwork, exposed in free air between machine modules, or trailing behind mobile face equipment.
| Cable Model | Insulation / Jacket, Mechanical Protection & Primary Duty |
|---|---|
| Type 1 (This Product) | AS/NZS 1972 (1.1 kV V-90 / 5V-90 PVC). Smallest OD (9.38–24.7 mm) for internal machine ducts and protected enclosures; requires external hose/conduit if exposed. |
| Type 2S & Type 2S.3 | AS/NZS 1972 Type 2S (1.1 kV) & Type 2S.3 (3.3 kV) use R-EP-90 EPR insulation and a heavy HD-90-CPE elastomer sheath — approved for external free-air machine interconnection and longwall lighting without extra conduit. |
| Type 209 / Type 241 | For primary off-board trailing/reeling power from gate-end boxes to the machine, specify AS/NZS 1802 Type 209 or Type 241. |
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Technical answers on individual vs. collective screening, external protection rules, and flameproof Ex d gland compatibility.
When should I specify Individually Screened vs. Collectively Screened Type 1 cable?
Specify Individually Screened Type 1 (2C, 3C, 4C up to 16 mm²) for auxiliary motor feeds and power circuits where phase-to-earth fault segregation is mandatory before any phase-to-phase fault can develop. Specify Collectively Screened Type 1 (2C to 30C × 1.5 mm²) for low-current solenoid, sensor, and pilot control harnesses to minimize overall diameter.
Can Mine Feeder Type 1 be installed exposed on the outside of a continuous miner or shuttle car?
Only if enclosed inside heavy-duty hydraulic/mining protective hose or steel ducting. Under AS/NZS 1972, Type 1 uses a thin 5V-90 PVC outer covering rather than a heavy-duty elastomer sheath; for unarmoured exposed interconnection runs on mobile machinery, specify Type 2S or Type 2S.3.
Why does Type 1 achieve C3 flame performance while Type 2S achieves C1?
High-chlorine V-90 and 5V-90 PVC compounds inherently self-extinguish vertical bunch flame propagation to meet the stringent AS/NZS 1660.5 C3 multi-cable vertical tray/duct flame category inside enclosed machine compartments.
